Online Purchase Recently Declined?

New Security Features FAQs

Q. Why was my transaction declined?
A. Effective July 10, 2018, card transactions will be declined when the billing address at the merchant does not match the mailing address we have on file. Please ensure the billing address you may have saved at online retailer sites matches the mailing address you have with us on file. If you’re unsure of the designated billing address associated with your SDCCU® account, simply log into Internet Branch online banking and review your information in the Self Service section.

Address verification is one of the most widely used fraud prevention tools for “card not present” transactions, such as online and catalog orders. An address verification inquiry compares the billing address used in the transaction with the issuing financial institution’s address information on file. If the two addresses do not match, a merchant’s next step can be to cancel the order to protect against potential fraud.

Criminals are constantly seeking new ways to take advantage of vulnerabilities and fraud is an ever-growing expensive problem affecting all financial institutions and merchants. Linking your name and address to the card being used for online and catalog orders significantly helps verify legitimate transactions and reduces fraudulent losses.

Please take a moment today to verify your billing address on file with SDCCU and ensure it matches information used for your online purchases. Should you have any questions please call (877) 732-2848.

Q. Why was my transaction declined?
A. If you received the letter or email to verify your address, your transaction was likely declined because your billing address with the merchant does not match the mailing address you have with SDCCU.

Q. Why was my transaction at the gas station declined?
A. Your transaction was likely declined because the zip code you entered at the pump does not match the mailing address you have with SDCCU.

Q. Why did my transaction go through before?
A. Today, fraudsters are constantly seeking new ways to take advantage of card users and online card fraud is an ever-growing problem that impacts consumers. For security reasons we now link your name and address to the card being used for online purchases which significantly helps verify legitimate purchases and reduces fraudulent transactions. As such, this address matching practice is becoming more widely used with financial institutions.

Q. Can SDCCU determine what address a merchant has on file for me?
A. No, you will need to contact the merchant to verify and possibly update your billing address on file with them.

Q. What can I do now?
A. Review your transactions and identify any recurring card charges and websites where you regularly shop. Ensure that the billing address you have on file with the merchants matches the mailing address you have with SDCCU.
