Lunar New Year, Year of the Horse, is February 17, 2026

SDCCU members who celebrate the Lunar New Year can pick up red envelopes at any of our convenient Southern California branch locations starting February 5. The Lunar New Year celebration is from February 17 to February 27, and this year is the Year of the Horse.

Based on the lunar calendar, Lunar New Year takes place on a different date each year. Traditionally, red envelopes are given to children or loved ones by their family members wishing them prosperity and good luck in the coming year. The red envelopes (traditionally known as hongbao in Mandarin, lai see in Cantonese, or li xi in Vietnamese) have money enclosed inside and are believed to bring happiness and luck to the recipients.

Each year within the 12-year cycle is represented by a Chinese zodiac animal, and characteristics are associated with each zodiac birth year. The horse symbolizes energy, freedom, and forward momentum and people born in the Year of the Horse are seen as independent, assertive, and natural leaders.
