Webinar aims to educate the community on elder financial abuse and crime prevention

SAN DIEGO, Calif., (July 28, 2026)  San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), one of California’s largest credit unions, will host a webinar, “Tips on How to Avoid Becoming the Next Victim of Elder Financial Abuse,” on Wednesday, August 5 at 12:00 p.m. This complimentary educational webinar will be presented by San Diego County Deputy District Attorney, Scott Pirrello.

Elder financial abuse is becoming more common. Fraudsters continue to employ many tactics to take advantage of victims, particularly seniors and those who are more vulnerable. According to the Department of Justice, elder abuse affects 10% of older adults each year in the United States and learning the warning signs of elder financial abuse is key in preventing it. During the webinar, Pirrello will cover common scams, what to watch for, and strategies to protect yourself or your loved ones from becoming a victim. To register, visit sdccu.com/fww.

“Protecting our community goes beyond helping people achieve their financial goals. It also means helping them recognize and prevent financial exploitation,” said Teresa Campbell, SDCCU president and CEO. “We’re proud to offer educational opportunities like this webinar that provide education and resources to keep the community safe from scams.”

Pirrello is the head of elder abuse prosecution for the San Diego District Attorney’s Office and has been a prosecutor for 20 years. Since 2009, Pirrello has been assigned to the Family Protection Division prosecuting a variety of family violence cases including elder abuse, domestic violence, and child abuse cases. Pirrello now focuses exclusively on prosecuting all varieties of elder abuse including physical, financial, sexual, and neglect cases and the vulnerable victims that accompany these cases. Pirrello has more than 40 jury trials to his credit, including cases involving murder, sexual assault, domestic violence, elder abuse, and others. Pirrello is an expert in elder abuse prevention enforcement, prosecution, and the multi-disciplinary team approach to elder abuse prevention.
