SDCCU reports that 31 tons (61,192 pounds) of paper were collected and shredded at three SDCCU locations in Southern California in November. The shredded paper tonnage equates to a saving of 527 trees.
As part as its ongoing commitment to promote identity theft prevention and awareness and go green in the community, SDCCU recently offered free shredding services on Saturday, Nov. 15 in the parking lots of its Encinitas, Santee and Temecula branches.
The 527 trees saved, with a capacity of absorbing 7,752 pounds of carbon dioxide annually, also represents an annual savings of 11,000 gallons of oil, 12,405 kilowatts of energy, 89 cubic yards of landfill space and 21,700 gallons of water.
“SDCCU is committed to helping our customers and the community protect their confidential data and privacy, and our Shred Days are outstanding opportunities to shred old personal documents the safe and easy way,” said Teresa Halleck, SDCCU President and CEO. “In addition, we are dedicated in our efforts to go green with our online banking services, such as eStatements and eReceipts. Moving to our online banking services, such as eStatements, is a great way to minimize the amount of confidential information you have at home and reduce waste.”
Since SDCCU began hosting its free Shred Day events in 2007, SDCCU has collected, shredded and recycled more than 1.1 million pounds of documents at no charge, saving over 10,200 trees (every 120 pounds shredded represents one saved tree).
Earlier this year, SDCCU hosted a “Super Shred Event” at Qualcomm® Stadium and more than 422,350 pounds of paper were shredded, protecting the community and saving 3,590 trees. The event, attended by more than 7,000 people, set a new Guinness World Record for the most paper collected in a 24-hour period at a single location, shredding the previous record of 401,925 pounds that was set by an organization in Texas in April 2014.
