SDCCU has announced its support of the Arthritis Foundation’s 2014 Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis, a 5-kilometer run/walk fundraiser starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, in San Diego’s Balboa Park area. This is the third year for SDCCU’s sponsorship support of this event.
Now in its 22nd year, the Arthritis Foundation San Diego branch’s Jingle Bell Run/Walk is expected to draw more than 2,000 participants. All participants are encouraged to wear holiday themed costumes, including jingle bells on shoelaces and reindeer antlers.
Considered one of the community’s most popular themed races, the Jingle Bell Run/Walk is a fun and festive way to kick off the holidays by helping others. Participating teams will include businesses, neighborhoods, clubs, community groups, churches and family members affected by arthritis. Four-legged family members on leashes are welcomed. Prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed teams, individuals and pets.
This year’s fundraiser will start and finish at 6th Avenue and Quince Street in San Diego’s Balboa Park area. Free parking and shuttles will be available at Balboa Park’s Old Navy Hospital parking lot at Park Boulevard and President’s Way. Event day registration begins at 6:30 a.m. with the Health & Wellness Expo opening at 7 a.m. The run starts at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 8:05 a.m. The 5K (3.1 mile) route is a USATF certified course with timing by RaceWire. Registration on event day is $40 per person for adults and $20 for youth under age 12 participating over a 1K (.62 mile) course. For more event information, visit sdjbr.org.
“We are proud to support this event because we know that arthritis is the nation’s leading cause of disability and the need is growing for raising awareness and reducing the impact of this serious disease,” said Teresa Halleck, SDCCU President and CEO.
The Jingle Bells Run/Walk in San Diego is one of nearly 150 such fundraisers to be held in U.S. cities across the country this year. The Arthritis Foundation funds life-changing research that has restored mobility in patients for more than six decades, fights for health care policies that improve the lives of the millions who live with arthritis and partners with families to provide empowering programs and information. Arthritis is a debilitating disease that affects more than 400,000 adults and 6,000 children in the San Diego community. Contrary to popular belief, arthritis strikes people of all ages, not just the elderly. In fact, two-thirds of the 53 million Americans with arthritis are under the age of 65, including over 300,000 children. In particular, juvenile arthritis can be especially painful for children.
