“With the annual tax filing deadline just past, it was a perfect time to offer this free service to the community and SDCCU was pleased so many people took advantage of it,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “Protecting your identity and properly disposing of confidential information is becoming increasingly more important with a greater prevalence of fraud in recent years; SDCCU services, such such as eStatements, eNotices and eReceipts, are a great way to minimize the risk.”
SDCCU began hosting its free Shred Day Events in 2007 and has since collected, shredded and recycled more than 720,000 pounds of documents at no charge, saving over 6,100 trees (every 120 pounds shredded represents one saved tree). The events have also saved the community close to $80,000 in costs associated with shredding documents.
Last year at the SDCCU Super Shred Event, SDCCU earned the Guinness World Record holder for the most paper collected in a 24-hour period. The exciting occasion—held at Qualcomm® Stadium—helped hundreds of people, used 40 trucks and resulted in the collection of a total of 168,147 pounds of paper. SDCCU plans to break the record again this year at their next SDCCU Super Shred Event scheduled for July 26, 2014.
