SDCCU, San Diego’s largest locally owned financial institution, was proud to serve as a community sponsor of the recent grand opening celebration for the County of San Diego’s Waterfront Park.
What used to be a 1,100-space parking lot near the County Administration Building that was dedicated in 1938—the same year SDCCU was formed—by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt has now been transformed into a large, 12-acre bayfront community and regional open space amenity featuring the region’s largest and free waterfront park. It is regarded as San Diego’s largest urban park since the Panama-California Exposition opened in Balboa Park in1915.
The park includes a large grassy promenade, a children’s play area, low-water-using theme gardens, plazas and terraces, a picnic area, shade trees, public restrooms, lookout spots for fireworks and a unique water feature—an expansive 850-foot-long interactive fountain with more than 30 jets daily pulsating about 80,000 gallons of recycled water as high as 14 feet up into the air into 40-foot-wide pools and a shallow splash area where both kids and adults can play.
“This new waterfront park is truly a civic treasure, and we are proud to be part of it,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “We were gratified when our civic leaders approached us for support because they recognized the significant role we play in our community.”
The previous existing parking lot had been targeted numerous times over the years for development of hotels or other commercial projects. However, the persistent efforts of County Supervisor Ron Roberts have been credited for transforming the area into a locale that could only be found in San Diego, overlooking San Diego Bay and the Star of India, a restored, full-rigged iron windjammer ship built in 1863 that sailed from Great Britain to India and New Zealand and then later as a salmon hauler on the Alaska to California route.
The opening ceremonies, hailed as an historic and memorable day of entertainment, recreation and civic pride for the region, were held May 10.
