“We were proud to sponsor the Salk Institute’s Step Into Discovery, which supported public education and celebrated the Salk labs where tomorrow’s cures are being developed,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “We applaud the Salk Institute for its focus both on discovery and on mentoring future generations of researchers.”
Step Into Discovery kicked off with the 5K Walk for Salk inside Salk’s iconic courtyard. About 1,000 participants enjoyed scenic views along Torrey Pines Road. Proceeds from the walk directly supported research in the areas of cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, healthy aging, diabetes, obesity and plant biology. The walk also benefited Salk's education outreach program for students throughout San Diego County.
In addition to the Walk for Salk, Step Into Discovery also included Explore Salk, a free open house. The Institute opened its doors to the public and allowed exclusive tours of the science labs, plus the opportunity to meet acclaimed scientists. Self-guided architecture tours and science talks were also available to guests throughout the day. A health and wellness festival was set up on the campus featuring family activities and a variety of vendor booths, including financial services from SDCCU and free health screenings from Scripps Health.
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies is one of the world's preeminent basic research institutions where internationally renowned faculty probe fundamental life science questions in a unique, collaborative, and creative environment. Over the decades, Salk scientists have made groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of cancer, aging, Alzheimer's, diabetes and infectious diseases by studying neuroscience, genetics, cell and plant biology, and related disciplines. Faculty achievements have been recognized with numerous honors, including Nobel Prizes and memberships in the National Academy of Sciences. Founded in 1960 by polio vaccine pioneer Jonas Salk, M.D., the Institute is an independent nonprofit organization and architectural landmark.
