San Diego’s largest locally owned financial institution, recently served as the title sponsor of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s San Diego County Credit Union 2014 Walk MS, held in San Diego on April 26 and 27.
Two San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS events were held. On Saturday morning, April 26, at NTC Park at Liberty Station in San Diego’s Point Loma area, 3,314 walkers walked a three-mile route along San Diego Bay and helped raise $434,107 in donations. Then, on Sunday morning, April 27, at LEGOLAND® California Resort in Carlsbad, Calif., 3,439 walked a 1.5-mile route through the park and helped raise $463,121. Combined, the two fundraising walks drew more than 6,700 walkers who helped raise nearly $900,000 in donations.
Proceeds from Walk MS will benefit research and programs and services for people with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body. Walkers will qualify for prizes, including t-shirts, movie tickets and gift cards, based on the amount of donations collected before the June 3 deadline.
“We were proud to participate in such inspirational Walk MS events that celebrate the power of a community coming together in a movement toward a world free of multiple sclerosis,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “We were also proud of Team SDCCU, a volunteer group made up of our employees, customers and friends, who were there on both days to step out in the fight against MS.”
Close to 175 employees, family members and friends represented Team SDCCU over the two days of events. At the post-event Walk MS awards ceremony at LEGOLAND, Team SDCCU was selected by National MS Society officials for the “coolest team” award. Other awards presented included best rookie team captain, costumes and number of walkers.
SDCCU has supported Walk MS for more than 15 years and has served as title sponsor since 2002. Over the years, SDCCU’s sponsorship support for Walk MS has exceeded $1 million, according to the National MS Society’s San Diego-based Pacific South Coast Chapter.
