SAN DIEGO, Calif., (June 1, 2022) –  San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), one of San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institutions, is excited to announce that Jose Lopez of San Ysidro High School was named the Best Local Theatre Teacher at the Broadway San Diego Awards. The awards ceremony was held May 29 at the Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego.

“SDCCU congratulates Mr. Lopez for being named Best Local Theatre Teacher,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Campbell. “We are thrilled to recognize the hard work, dedication and talent of teachers throughout San Diego County. The students competing in the Broadway San Diego Awards could never reach their full potential without these amazing theatre teachers.”

More than 30 teachers were nominated and nearly 150 votes were submitted in the Best Local Theatre Teacher Awards contest at sdccu.com/theatreteacher. Students, parents, family members and friends were asked to nominate and vote for a deserving drama/theatre teacher who made a positive difference in their life, the life of a child or in the community. As part of the award, SDCCU will send Lopez to New York City to attend the 2022 Jimmy Awards®, also known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards®.

The Best Local Theatre Teacher Award is part of the 2022 Broadway San Diego Awards, sponsored by SDCCU and held in collaboration with Broadway San Diego. Candidates were selected from onsite adjudications of high school musicals at their home venues during the 2021/2022 school year. Congratulations to Ryan Sweeney of Canyon Crest Academy for winning Best Actor, Kendall Becerra of Coronado School of the Arts for winning Best Actress.
