San Diego County Credit Union Proudly Celebrates 2020 Lunar New Year
Red envelopes are available at all of SDCCU’s branch locations throughout Southern California
SAN DIEGO, Calif., (January 22, 2020) -- San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®)
, is proud to celebrate the 2020 Lunar New Year. Through February 8, all SDCCU branch locations will have red envelopes (traditionally known as hong bao or lai see) for customers who participate in the Lunar New Year celebration. Lunar New Year starts January 25, 2020 and this year is the Year of the Rat.
Based on the lunar calendar, the Lunar New Year takes place on a different date each year. Celebrations last for over two weeks and often include firecrackers and lion dances.
Traditionally, red envelopes are given to children by their parents or family members wishing them health and good studies in the coming year. The red envelopes always have money enclosed, typically new bills, and are believed to bring good luck.
Each year of the 12-year cycle is represented by a Chinese zodiac animal and characteristics are associated with each zodiac birth year. Rats are a symbol of strong vitality in culture and people born in the Year of the Rat are seen as intelligent, charming and quick-witted.
SDCCU is also participating in the following Lunar New Year events: UVSA Lunar New Year Tet Festival in Orange County January 24-26; VAYA Tet Festival in Mira Mesa January 24-26; Lunar New Year Tet Festival at Balboa Park January 25-26; Chinese New Year Fair in downtown San Diego on February 8-9.
