San Diego County Credit Union is a Proud Supporter of Earth Day

SDCCU maintains focus on providing green-friendly services to the community throughout the year

SAN DIEGO, Calif., (April 22, 2019)--San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, is a proud supporter of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated worldwide on April 22. Earth Day was created to raise awareness about pollution and celebrate the planet’s environment, and has evolved to include festivals, conferences and activities all focused on environmentalism and education. SDCCU supports Earth Day not only by participating in local events, but by offering free green-friendly shredding and recycling services to the community through its SDCCU Free Shred Day and Super Shred events held at various times throughout the year.
On April 27, SDCCU will participate in the La Mesa Earth Day Festival at Harry Griffen Regional Park in La Mesa. The free festival is open to the public and features interactive booths, STEM activities, arts and crafts, food trucks, vendors and A Pedal for the Planet Trail Ride. The La Mesa Earth Day Festival is one of more than 20 Earth Day activities scheduled around San Diego in honor of Mother Nature in the month of April.
SDCCU is also committed to helping the community properly dispose of sensitive data through free shredding and recycling services offered through SDCCU Free Shred Day and SDCCU Super Shred events held multiple times throughout the year in San Diego, Orange and Riverside counties. SDCCU began hosting its free Shred Day events in 2007 and has since collected, shredded and recycled more than 4.1 million pounds of documents at no charge, saving over 34,000 trees (roughly 120 pounds shredded represents one saved tree). The events have also saved the community roughly $451,000 in costs associated with shredding documents. SDCCU was the first financial institution and remains the only to be named a Live Well San Diego partner for its efforts in helping to create a safer San Diego by providing free shredding services to the community.
SDCCU’s latest Free Shred Day Event, held at three locations on March 9, resulted in a total of 62,700 pounds of paper collected and shredded, saving over 533 trees. The next SDCCU Super Shred Event is scheduled for June 15 at SDCCU Stadium where the company plans to break its own most paper shredded in 8 hours Guinness World Records® title. The public is invited to bring an unlimited amount of documents to be shredded and recycled for free.
Other green efforts set forth by SDCCU include encouraging members to use online banking services such as eStatements, eNotices and eReceipts.
