San Diego County Credit Union Returns as Sponsor of the San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee

Congratulations to Elliott Husseman of Inspire Charter Schools

SAN DIEGO, Calif., (March 15, 2019) -- San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, returned for the 14th consecutive year as the presenting sponsor of the 50th Annual San Diego Union-Tribune Countywide Spelling Bee, presented in collaboration with the San Diego County Office of Education.

This year’s Spelling Bee was held on Thursday, March 14, at the Town and Country Resort in San Diego.

The San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee is open to 6th-, 7th- and 8th-grade students in public or private schools with a combined enrollment of 30 or more children who have won their individual school’s Spelling Bee. Congratulations to Elliott Husseman of Inspire Charter Schools for beating dozens of competitors and becoming this year’s champion. He correctly spelled the word “voiturette.” As the winner, he is awarded the title of Spelling Bee Champion, and with his chaperone, won an all-expenses-paid trip to National Harbor, Maryland to compete in the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee competition held in May 2019.

“SDCCU is proud to once again partner with the San Diego County Office of Education and The San Diego Union-Tribune to sponsor this inspiring educational event,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Campbell. “This is the perfect forum for students to test the spelling skills that they’ve worked so hard to perfect.”

Last year’s San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee began with over 100 students and ended with one champion, Kevin Luo of Pacific Trails Middle School in Del Mar. Luo’s victory came after correctly spelling the word “gradine,” which refers to a low step or ledge, especially one at the back of an altar. San Diego has a history of making a strong showing at the national level. Francis Parker School’s Snigdha Nandipati won the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee, and Anurag Kashyap, who attended Meadowbrook Middle School in the Poway Unified School District, was the 2005 national champion. Nandipati was the countywide champion in both 2011 and 2012.
