SDCCU returns as sponsor of the San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee

Congratulations to Kevin Luo of Pacific Trails Middle School in Carmel Valley!

SDCCU returned for the twelfth consecutive year as the presenting sponsor of the 49th Annual San Diego Union-Tribune Countywide Spelling Bee, presented in collaboration with the San Diego County Office of Education.

This year’s Spelling Bee was held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 15, at the McMillin Companies Event Center in Liberty Station.

The San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee is open to 6th-, 7th- and 8th-grade students in public or private schools with a combined enrollment of 30 or more children who have won their individual school’s Spelling Bee. Congratulations to Kevin Luo of Pacific Trails Middle School for beating dozens of competitors and becoming this year’s champion. He correctly spelled the word “gradine.” As the winner, he is awarded the title of Spelling Bee Champion, and with his chaperone, won an all-expenses-paid trip to the Washington, D.C. area to compete in the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee competition held in May 2018. Last year’s winner was also from Pacific Trails Middle School.

“SDCCU is proud to once again partner with the San Diego County Office of Education and The San Diego Union-Tribune to sponsor this exciting educational event,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “This is the perfect forum for students to test the spelling skills that they’ve worked so hard to perfect.”

Last year’s San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee began with over 100 students and ended with one champion, Yash Hande of Pacific Trails Middle School in Del Mar. Hande’s victory came after correctly spelling the word “sphacelated,” which refers to something that has become gangrenous. San Diego has a history of making a strong showing at the national level. Francis Parker School’s Snigdha Nandipati won the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee, and Anurag Kashyap, who attended Meadowbrook Middle School in the Poway Unified School District, was the 2005 national champion. Nandipati was the countywide champion in both 2011 and 2012.
