San Diego County Credit Union returns as title sponsor of 2018 Walk MS

More than 6,000 people expected to walk toward a world free of MS April 15 and 21

San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, is returning as the title sponsor of the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society’s 2018 San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS, to be held in San Diego County on April 15 and 21.

“SDCCU is a proud sponsor of Walk MS and we are excited to once again join in the movement toward a world free of multiple sclerosis,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “We are looking forward to rallying Team SDCCU—a volunteer group made up of our customers, employees, friends and families who are passionate about making a difference—to join in the fight against this devastating and relentless disease.”

SDCCU has served as title sponsor of Walk MS since 2002, and in 2013, SDCCU was recognized for exceeding the $1 million mark in funds raised for the National MS Society. The two 2018 Walk MS events in San Diego County will raise donations to benefit research, services and programs for people with MS. Now through May 12, donations toward the Walk are being accepted at all SDCCU branch locations in San Diego, Orange and Riverside counties.

The first San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS will be held Sunday morning, April 15 along Armada Drive in Carlsbad, where more than 3,000 people are expected to walk to support a world free of Walk MS. The second walk is Saturday morning, April 21 at NTC Park at Liberty Station in San Diego’s Point Loma area, where more than 3,000 people are expected to walk a three-mile route along San Diego Bay. SDCCU is also supporting Walk MS in Irvine, which will be held on April 7. All events are dog-friendly. The events combined are targeted to raise more than $1.5 million in donations.

Now in its 27th year in San Diego, Walk MS events are known for drawing a large number of teams representing businesses, neighborhoods, clubs, community groups, churches and family members and friends of someone with MS. Many teams participate by selecting a team name and outfitting their participants with costumes, including T-shirts, hats or balloons. Team SDCCU will be at the three events in Southern California. Join our team or donate to one of the following Walk MS events: SDCCU Walk MS Carlsbad, SDCCU Walk MS San Diego or Walk MS Irvine.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s San Diego-based Pacific South Coast Chapter serves more than 51,500 people affected by MS living in San Diego, Orange and Imperial counties, as well as the Hawaiian Islands. Affecting more than 2.3 million people worldwide, MS is an unpredictable neurological disease that interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and the rest of the body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis, as well as blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue and cognitive deficits. These symptoms might be permanent, or they might come and go. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, although an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 children under the age of 18 also live with MS. Two to three times more women than men are diagnosed with the disease. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS.
