SDCCU returns as sponsor of the San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee

Annual language arts competition celebrates spelling proficiency

SDCCU is returning for the eleventh consecutive year as a sponsor of the 48th annual San Diego Union-Tribune Countywide Spelling Bee, presented in collaboration with the San Diego County Office of Education.

This year’s Spelling Bee will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 23, at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.
 
The San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee is open to 6th-, 7th- and 8th-grade students in public or private schools with a combined enrollment of 30 or more children who have won their school Spelling Bee. The overall winner of the Spelling Bee will be awarded the title of Spelling Bee Champion, and that student with his or her chaperone will win an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee competition held in May.

Last year’s San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee began with over 100 students and ended with one champion, Ella Peters of Notre Dame Academy in Carmel Valley. San Diego has a history of making a strong showing at the national level. Francis Parker School’s Snigdha Nandipati won the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee, and Anurag Kashyap, who attended Meadowbrook Middle School in the Poway Unified School District, was the 2005 national champion. Nandipati was the countywide champion in both 2011 and 2012.
