Nearly 40,000 pounds of paper collected, over 335 trees saved at latest SDCCU Shred Day Event

SDCCU is the current Guinness World Record® holder for the most paper collected in 24 hours

SDCCU is committed to helping the community properly dispose of sensitive data, an effort that landed them their third Guinness World Record® for the most paper collected in 24 hours in one location in July 2015. SDCCU’s latest free Shred Day Event, held at three locations on April 9, resulted in a total of 39,367 pounds of paper collected and shredded.
“We believe in making our community a more secure place, and SDCCU has been helping people to properly dispose of confidential, personal information by offering our Shred Day events for free since 2007,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “Additionally, SDCCU’s secure paperless services such as eStatements, eNotices and eReceipts help to minimize our customer’s risk of identity theft and fraud.”
SDCCU began hosting its free Shred Day events in 2007 and has since collected, shredded and recycled almost 1.9 million pounds of documents at no charge, saving over 15,800 trees (roughly 120 pounds shredded represents one saved tree). The events have also saved the community close to $203,000 in costs associated with shredding documents. In 2014, SDCCU was the first financial institution and remains the only to be named a Live Well San Diego partner for its efforts in helping to create a safer San Diego by providing free shredding services to the community.
Last year at the SDCCU Super Shred Event, SDCCU earned its third Guinness World Record for the most paper collected in a 24-hour period at a single location. The exciting occasion—held at Qualcomm® Stadium—helped thousands of people, resulted in the collection of a total of 584,350 pounds of paper and saved 5,000 trees. SDCCU plans to break the record again this year at their next SDCCU Super Shred Event scheduled for July 30, 2016 at Qualcomm Stadium.
