24,253 pounds of paper collected, over 200 trees saved at latest SDCCU Shred Day

SDCCU is the current Guinness World Record® holder for the most paper collected in 24 hours and most paper shredded in 8 hours

SDCCU is committed to helping the community properly dispose of sensitive data, an effort that landed them two Guinness World Record titles last June. SDCCU’s latest free Shred Day Event, held at three locations on November 4, resulted in a total of 24,253 pounds of paper collected and shredded.

“SDCCU is pleased to provide this valuable service to the community. With a greater prevalence of fraud in recent years, it is more important than ever to properly dispose of confidential data. Another way customers can protect themselves from fraud is to use SDCCU’s secure paperless banking services such as eStatements and eReceipts,” said Teresa Halleck, president and CEO of SDCCU.

SDCCU began hosting its free Shred Day Events in 2007 and has since collected, shredded and recycled nearly 3.5 million pounds of paper at no charge, saving nearly 30,000 trees (roughly 120 pounds shredded represents one saved tree). The events have also saved the community over $380,000 in costs associated with shredding documents. In 2014, SDCCU was the first financial institution to be named a Live Well San Diego partner in part for its efforts in helping to create a safer San Diego by providing free shredding services to the community.

Earlier this year at the SDCCU Super Shred Event, SDCCU set its fifth and sixth Guinness World Record titles for the most paper collected in a 24-hour period and the most paper shredded in 8 hours. The exciting occasion—held at SDCCU Stadium—helped thousands of people, resulted in the collection of a total of 898,931 pounds of paper and saved 7,641 trees.
