Boise State routs Northern Illinois at the 2015 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl

National TV audience views America’s only college football bowl game with a credit union as the title sponsor

SDCCU applauded another successful San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl—the only college football bowl game among America’s 41 college football bowl games to have a credit union as a title sponsor. SDCCU has served as the title sponsor of the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl since the bowl game’s inception in 2005.

At the 11th annual San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, played Dec. 23 at Qualcomm® Stadium in San Diego, the Boise State Broncos (9-4) won the coin toss against the Northern Illinois Huskies (8-6), which was just the beginning of the bowl game blowout. The Broncos took the opening kickoff and moved 75 yards in three plays for the fastest touchdown in the school’s bowl history. The Broncos’ Jeremy McNichols scored three touchdowns, the first one just 58 seconds into the game, leading to a final score of 55 to 7, upsetting the Huskies.

McNichols and the Broncos kept piling on as the running back from Long Beach scored on each of the next two possessions, on a 4-yard pass from Brett Rypien and on a 1-yard run. McNichols ran 19 times for 93 yards and caught five passes for 96 yards. He came in tied with Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry of Alabama for the national lead with 23 touchdowns. Rypien was 29 of 40 for 377 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception. The Broncos outgained the Huskies 654 yards to 33.

The Huskies lost three fumbles in the first half. Tyler Gray recovered two of them. They avoided a shutout when Aregeros Turner returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to make it 24-7 midway through the second quarter. Ultimately, the Huskies were left disappointed as they fell to 0-3 in the Poinsettia Bowl; Boise State improved to 1-1 in the Poinsettia Bowl.

This year’s crowd of over 21,500 was also entertained by the first-ever Stadium Spectacular, a fireworks extravaganza, and 2016 Grammy® nominee Andra Day, who sang the National Anthem. Day also took center stage to countdown Stadium Spectacular with a soulful performance of her hit single “Rise Up,” available now wherever you download music, from Buskin Records/Warner Brothers Records.

“SDCCU is the proud title sponsor of the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. This year’s event created a memorable experience for attendees. They enjoyed some football, watched an incredible performance by Andra Day and witnessed the first ever Stadium Spectacular. The bowl game has not only become a holiday tradition in San Diego but it has also contributed a great deal to our local economy over the past 11 years,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck.

According to the San Diego Bowl Game Association, the non-profit entity that produces the game, the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl generates millions of dollars into the San Diego economy during a week when the region’s tourism industry is at one of its slowest times of the year. The mission of the Association is to generate tourism, exposure, economic benefit and civic pride for San Diego and its citizens by producing the nation’s most exciting bowl games and festival of activities. Officials report that the previous ten San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl games combined added more than $85 million of revenue into the local economy.

Biz Kid$ was the beneficiary of the 2015 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, which means $1 from each ticket sold to this year’s game will be donated to help teach kids in San Diego about money and business. The grand total presented at this year’s bowl game was $22,500. Launched in 2008 in partnership with the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF), Biz Kid$ is an award-winning comprehensive financial literacy program focused on teaching kids how to use credit wisely and the importance of saving, budgeting, investing and giving back to their communities.
