Always protect your PIN at the ATM, gas station and merchant PIN pads. Even if you think no one is watching!

Security of customer data is of the utmost importance to SDCCU. We are all too familiar with fraudsters who steal card data from merchants. Additionally, you may be aware that news reports all over the country have highlighted how fraudsters can install “skimmers” to capture a user’s card and PIN data right at the ATM. What’s worse is that many ATM goers would be unaware that their card and PIN data may have been compromised.

To combat this, you should be vigilant when using any ATM or merchant PIN pad (gas stations, grocery stores, point of sale machines, etc.).

  1. Be aware of your surroundings. Use familiar machines and look around the machine for anything odd. If you notice any loose equipment, notify the branch or SDCCU immediately. If you were using another financial institution, contact the issuing financial institution or merchant to report the situation.
  2. Always cover your PIN when using an ATM or merchant PIN pad. As reported in the news, some fraudsters install a card “skimmer” as well as a tiny camera to capture PIN information. If users cover the keypad while entering the PIN, fraudsters will be less likely to capture the PIN.
  3. Monitor your accounts. Diligently monitor your account and immediately report any suspicious activity.
  4. SDCCU Text Fraud Alerts. We offer convenient real-time fraud alerts via text message. These alerts can help prevent fraudulent activity on your signature-based debit and credit transactions. Learn more and enroll today!
