7 Things to do on Black Friday (That aren’t Shopping)
Frequently during the holidays, we get so wrapped up in what we want to give or buy to celebrate, we forget about what it means to truly enjoy the season. There is no better time to enjoy our planet and what we give back to it then a time when consumerism is at an all-time high. Often, it’s a simple switch that can make the biggest impact. Here are 7 tips on how you can spend your Black Friday without the price tag.

  • Green Friday. Swap Black Friday spending for outdoor experiences. The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation will be hosting free opportunities to get outside. From ranger-led hikes to touch tables and animal exhibitions, these events are both active and educational. Providing fun recreation opportunities with efforts to protect and preserve land and wildlife. Find fun events located by you here

  • Visit your local library. What better way to get away from the craziness of the holidays then getting sucked into a good book. While you can still go to the library and check out a book, they are way more modern than you might think. Stream movies, download an e-book and even use your library card to gain free admission to select museums.

  • Make something. There is no better way to get into the holiday spirit then the smell of fresh baked goods. At a loss for what to give a friend? Why not give them something from the heart, like fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. Not a great baker? Try your hand at a craft. Most of the time, a well thought out and handmade gift is a more meaningful present than one picked up at the store. Plus, a handmade gift often looks more expensive then it is, bonus points!

  • Learn a new skill. The holidays are a time where we reflect on our year and celebrate the time ahead of us. Try to learn a new skill that can help you better your future self.

  • Practice self-care. Some use shopping as retail therapy but some may feel regret once the shopping high has passed. Switch it up and pamper yourself. Holidays can be stressful and we need to unwind. Whether it be date night with your loved one or just sitting on the couch and binge watching your favorite show. Do what genuinely makes you happy this Black Friday.

  • Hold a yard sale. Spending money is fun but receiving money is even better. Start the New Year off with less clutter and a bigger wallet. If you spaced on saving up for holiday gifts, this can also help give you the extra boost you needed.

  • Call a loved one. Do you often remind yourself to call your loved one but then get sucked up in the hectic day? Take this day of shopping off and actually check things off your personal list.

No matter what you decide to do this Black Friday, make sure it brings you joy. We get so wrapped up in the “tradition” of holiday shopping that we forget how far our money can actually take us. Make an impact on your life and the planet for the better.
